Van Lew Mansion (23rd & Grace Sts.), Richmond, Va.
Card text
This stately old mansion owes its fame to the fact that it was the former home of Miss Van Lew, a Union Sympathizer during the Civil War. She frequently found means of conveying secret information to the Federal armies investing Richmond, and harbored for a time the 19 prisoners who escaped from Libby Prison. After the war she was appointed Post-Mistress of Richmond by Gen'l Grant, then president of the U.S. The building is now used as private hospital.
