Unveiled Dec. 13, 1892. Represents a typical artilleryman at position 'Number One.' Organized in Richmond in Nov. 1859, its first service was to assist in defending Virginia during the John Brown 'raid.' Its original armament consisted of mounted, naval or boat howitzers, drawn by cannoneers. Was in the field during the entire war, being dis-banded at Appomattox. At Gettysburg it occupied a position near the 'Peach Orchard.'
