MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE
BOARD OF VISITORS OF
VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY
June 15, 2004
A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Board of Visitors of Virginia
Commonwealth University was held on Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at 12 noon in the
conference room located in Biotech III at 701 North Fifth Street. The full Board was
invited to attend.
Present were Drs. Perkinson (Rector) and Romano; Mr. Rigsby; and Mrs. Petera.
Dr. Bersoff and Mr. Pyon participated via telephone. Mr. Axselle was absent. Also
present were Drs. Trani, McDavis, Retchin and Ton; Messrs. Bunce, Gehring, Ross (via
telephone), Timmreck and Wyeth; and Mesdames Balmer, Lepley and Messmer.
Dr. Perkinson called the meeting to order. A recommendation for renaming the
Academic Campus was presented. VCU has two campuses, the Medical College of
Virginia (MCV) Campus is adjacent to Richmond's business and financial district, and is
the location of the VCU Medical Center. The Academic Campus is situated adjacent to
the city's historic residential neighborhood known as the Fan District. The campuses
trace their origins to the same time period. The Medical College of Virginia was
established in 1854. Monroe Park, which is surrounded by VCU in the Fan District and
serves as the University's campus green, is Richmond's oldest park. The park was
acquired by the city in 1851 and was the site of state and national agricultural fairs. The
park remains under city ownership and is maintained by VCU. On motion made and
seconded, the Executive Committee approved the renaming of the Academic Campus to
the Monroe Park Campus and the proposed site of the new School of Business and
School of Engineering expansion, which informally had been called the Monroe Campus,
will be named the Monroe Park Campus Addition.
The meeting was adjourned at 12:15 p.m.
