MINUTES OF A RETREAT OF THE
BOARD OF VISITORS OF
VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY
January 13, 2001
A Retreat of the Board of Visitors of Virginia Commonwealth University
was held on Saturday, January 13, 2001 at 9 a.m. in the Jefferson Hotel located
at 101 West Franklin Street.
Present were Messrs. Flippen, Axselle, Gresham, Markel, Plymale, Pyon
and Rigsby; Drs. Perkinson, Smith and Wootton; and Mesdames Benner, Miles
and Petera. Dr. Long and Messrs. Townes and Weinberg were absent.
Also present were Drs. Kontos, McDavis and Torr; Messrs. Ross,
Timmreck and Wyeth; and Mesdames Messmer and Price.
Mr. Flippen called the meeting to order. Dr. Trani introduced the two
guest speakers for the Retreat, Dr. Linwood H. Rose, President of James
Madison University, and Dr. David F. Finney, Dean, School of Continuing and
Professional Studies and Special Assistant to the President at New York
University. The speakers presented an overview and information concerning
their marketing initiatives and how it impacted their history and future.
On motion made and seconded, the Board convened into closed session to
discuss certain personnel matters involving the performance of identifiable
employees or faculty of VCU, including the matter of the Evaluation of the
President, as authorized by Section 2.1-344 A(1) of the Virginia Freedom of
Information Act.
Following closed session, on motion made and seconded, the following
resolution was approved by roll call vote:
Virginia Commonwealth University hereby certifies that, to the best of each
member's knowledge, (i) only public business matters lawfully exempted from
open meeting requirements by Virginia law were discussed in the closed session
meeting to which this certification resolution applies, and (ii) only such public
business matters as were identified in the motion convening the closed session
meeting were heard, discussed or considered by the Board of Visitors of Virginia
Commonwealth University.
Following closed session, on motion made and seconded, the following
resolution was approved by roll call vote:
