              A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE 
             BOARD OF VISITORS OF 
         VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY 
                 May 11, 2000

    A special meeting of the Board of Visitors of Virginia Commonwealth Uni- 

versity was held on Thursday, May 11, 2000, at 5:30 p.m. in the University 

Meeting Center located at 101 North Harrison Street.

    Present were Messrs. Flippen, Axselle, Markel, Plymale, Pyon, Rigsby, 

Townes and Weinberg; and Drs. Long, Perkinson and Smith. Mesdames Benner 

and Miles; Dr. Wootton; and Messrs. Gresham Smith were absent. Also present 

were Drs. Trani, Huff, Kontos, Macrina, McDavis, Rhone and Self; Messrs. 

Blanks, Gehring, Ross, Timmreck and Wyeth; and Mesdames Messmer and 

Price.

    Mr. Flippen called the meeting to order. The meeting included a presen- 

tation by Dr. Trani, Dr. McDavis and Ms. Messmer on Virginia Commonwealth 

University's initiative to move from Tier 3 to Tier 2 for undergraduate programs as

ranked by U. S. News & World Report.

    The meeting was adjourned at 8 p.m.
