MINUTES OF A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE BOARD OF VISITORS
OF VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY
January 25, 1989
A special meeting of the Board of Visitors of Virginia
Commonwealth University was held on Wednesday, January 25, 1989, at
5:30 p.m. at the 11th Street Cafe on the MCV Campus.
Present were Messrs. Farinholt (Rector), Beadles, Gregory, Meador,
Morris and Whitworth; Drs. Holland, Johnson and Moore; and Mesdames
Abady and Epps. Absent were Messrs. Ferguson, Latham, Lipman and
Wurtzel; and Mrs. Whittemore. Also present were Drs. Ackell, Andrako,
Dewey and Ruch; Messrs. Bruegman, Fischer, Kudless and Ross; and Mrs.
Price.
Mr. Farinholt called the meeting to order and introduced Mr. Carl
Fischer, Executive Director of MCVH. Mr. Fischer stated that the most
critical issues facing teaching hospitals and MCVH in particular are:
How to finance the cost of graduate education? The federal
^ government has cut millions of dollars already with more cuts
proposed.
How to educate State officials about the necessity for the
• hospital to make a profit?
Mr. Fischer stated that in order for MCVH to be successful during
the coming years, it should:
Not focus on the short-term but on the long-term
• Have a willingness to restructure and adapt
• Develop a few of its better clinical programs into
• outstanding programs
Review decision making process as it relates to the State's
• control over purchasing, personnel, etc.
Generate a profit

Following Mr. Fischer's presentation, a tour was conducted of the
recently opened VIP Suites and the biliary lithotripter.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
