MINUTES OF A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE BOARD OF VISITORS
OF VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY
May 19, 1988
A special meeting of the Board of Visitors of Virginia Common-
wealth University was held on Thursday, May 19, 1988, at 5:30 p.m. at
the University Meeting Center.
Present were Messrs. Farinholt (Rector), Berry, Gregory, Latham,
Lipman, Meador, Morris, Whitworth and Wurtzel; Drs. Holland and Moore;
and Mesdames Abady and Epps. Absent were Messrs. Beadles and Smith;
and Mrs. Whittemore. Also present were Drs. Ackell, Connell, Ruch and
Sparks; Messrs. Bruegman, Kudless and Ross; and Mrs. Price. Invited
guests were Drs. Dewey and Macrina.
Mr. Farinholt called the meeting to order. Dr. Ackell introduced
Dr. Francis L. Macrina, Professor and Chairman of the Department of
Microbiology and Immunology, who discussed VCU's involvement with the
CIT and the CIT's Center for Biotechnology located at VCU and directed
by Dr. Macrina.
Dr. Dewey discussed the University's overall research and graduate
affairs areas. VCU has made great progress in the number of Ph.D.
graduates and in the increase of research funding.
Following a question and answer period, the meeting was adjourned
at 8 p.m.
