MINUTES OF A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE BOARD OF VISITORS
OF VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY
July 18, 1984
A special meeting of the Board of Visitors of Virginia Commonwealth
University was held on Wednesday, July 18, 1984, at 6:00 p.m. in the
University Meeting Center.
Present were Messrs. Allen, Berry, Lipman, Morris and Smith; Drs.
Gayle, Moore and Nemuth; and Mesdames Abady, Bemiss and Whittemore.
Absent were Mrs. Thalhimer; and Messrs. Farinholt, Grey, Ludeman, and
Reynolds. Also present were Drs;.
Andrako, and Hall; Messrs.
Bruegman and Ross; and Mrs. Price.
Dr. Ackell introduced Dr. Thomas Haas, Director of the Graduate
Engineering Program, who presented a report on the Cooperative Graduate
Engineering Program.
Dr. Haas stated that during the first year three institutions were
involved -- University of Virginia, Virginia Tech and VCU. This year
the program is being expanded to include George Mason University in
Northern Virginia and Old Dominion University in Norfolk. The number
Of courses offered this coming year will also increase with UVA offer-
ing six and Virginia Tech offering five. Industrial classrooms will be
provided at Philip Morris and Reynolds Metals.
An evaluation committee reviewed the program and concluded:

The telecommunication system does work.
2.
The students in the program scored similar to students in
on-campus programs.
3.
Overall, the students were pleased with the program.

Some problems identified by the committee included:

2. Materials handling between the universities needs improvement
The advising system need improvement.
3. Tutoring of students needs to be enhanced.
4. Faculty interaction needs improvement.
The Board viewed portions of a taped class lecture and a special
program on graduate engineering prepared by Channel 23.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
