MINUTES OF A SPECIAL MEETING OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF
THE BOARD OF VISITORS OF VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY
September 15, 1972
A special meeting of the Executive Committee of the Board of Visitors
of Virginia Commonwealth University was held September 15, 1972, at 12:30 p.m.
in the Board Room of Sanger Hall.
Present were all the members of the Committee except Messrs. Dabney
and Obenshain. Also present were Dr. Brandt, Mr. Imirie, Mr. McGehee and
Miss Cosby.
Two letters describing anesthesia staffing problems at the hospitals
were distributed to the Committee. One was from Dr. C. Paul Boyan to Dr. M.
Pinson Neal, Jr., dated September 5, 1972. The other letter was from Dr. David
M. Hume to Mr. John F. Imirie, Jr., dated September 13, 1972. Dr. Brandt and
Mr. Imirie related the facts of the numbers of personnel working in anesthesia
and the numbers of operating rooms and emergency surgical patients. If we
continue to lose anesthesia personnel, we will have to close some emergency
room surgical services. Before anything is closed, we will alert the other
hospitals in the area so that they will be prepared to take on the added load.
Mr. Imirie had prepared a salary scale to pay anesthesia personnel for
an eight-hour day plus a number of points per operation. Mr. John Garber
agreed to a raise of $1,500 a year. We have been losing these people for
$3,000-$5,000 a year. We are trying to establish a non-profit corporation to
contract the services of these people.
