In Camp with Johnsons Br[i]g[ade]
near Chaffin's Bluff
Sept[ember] 5th 1864
Dr. Joynes
D[ear] Sir
In this mornings "Examiner"
I noticed an advertisement of the "Annual
Course of Lectures of the Medcial College of Va."
I will be obliged to you if you will
send me a copy of the Catalogue
There has been with me for the past
two years, a young man Mr. John W. Templeton
an hospital Steward appointed by the Sec[retary] of War
Who if it be at all possible I should like
very much to have the benefit of a course of
Lectures this session.
He has attended one course of
Lectures at Nashville Tenn[essee], and been connected with
the Medical Dep[ar]t[ment] of the Army since the battle of "Shiloh,"
is of the good mind, sufficently good priliminary education
of good morals, and very deligent, and thoroughly
trustworthy in the discharge of his duties.
When the war is over he will be compelled to rely
entirely upon his own individual execrtions for a live-
lihood, and if it be possible I should like to procure
him an opportunity of attending the ensuing course of
Lectures at your Institution with a view to gradu
-
ation and dutiance into the Army next Spring, as Ass[istan]t
Surgeon
I shall dislike very much to loose the services
of as intelligent and trustworthy a person as he is,

Any trouble on your part I am sure would be greatfully appreciated by a young man,(at pres - ent ignorant of any effort in his behalf) who may prove an ornament to our profession, and I am sure will never disgrace it, and also by. Yours most sincerely John D. Jackson Sen[io]r Surg[eon] Johnson's Br[i]g[a]d[e] Dep[artmen]t of Richmond [Addressed:] To L.S. Joynes M.D. Dean of Faculty of "V[irgini]a Med[ical] College" Dr, John D. Jackson Senior [crossout Chief] Surgeon Johnson's Brig[ade] Sept. 5, 1864 Relating to transfer of a Hospital Steward to Richmond |
