Camp 57th N[orth] C[arolina] Reg[iment] Godwin's Brig[ade]
Early's Div[ision] Army Valley Dist[rict]
Oct. 11 1864
Professor J.B. M'[c]Caw MD
Surgeon in charge Chimborazo Hospital
Dear Sir
Having acted
under you last winter as Hospital Steward or
ward master of "F" 3rd Division and having also
attended your lectures at the Medical College
I would most respectfully request that you
procure a transfer for me the coming winter
for the above mentioned duty, or some other
if possible in your Hospital.
I am very anxious to prosecute my studies
in the medical school and the above method
is the only one by which I will be enabled to
do so. I attended lectures last winter
and think that by due dillegence I will be
enabled to graduate if I can attend for another
session.
Hoping that you will do all you can
in my behalf, for which I will be under
many obligations to you I am Doctor.
Most Respectfully Yr obt Servt.
A[mos] L. McCanless
ordnance Sergeant 57 NC Reg[iment]
