Oct[ober] the 13th 1864
To Dean of the Medical Faculty
Sir
I desire to attend the Lectures at
your College this winter. I am a first
course student. I attended a course at
the Augusta Medical College in the fall
and winter of 1860 and [18]61. Immediately after
I got home from the Lectures I vol-
unteered in the 7th S.C. Reg[imen]t in which
reg[imen]t I served until at the battle of
Sharpsburg M[arylan]d {Sept[ember]. 17 1862} where I was wounded
in the right shoulder, which has pro-
duced anchylosis. I was furloughed home.
The first of this year I went before the
Medical board and got a certificate
of permanent disability, which I sent to
the 7th S.C. Reg[imen]t. togeather with a petition
to exempt me from service this year
to teach school, which petition was
approved. So I have been teaching school
this year. My exemption ceases at the end
of this year unless I get it renewed.
I would thank you to write me
immediately how I must proceed in
