Mongomery White Sulpher Springs
Sep[empter] 7, 1863.
Dear Doct[or]
Your note of the 4th inst[ant] has
just reached me. Your idea with regard
to worthless preparations exactly conincided
with my own views. The sooner we are
rid of them the better. They occupy space
and are an eye sore.
You congratulated me on my escape from
Richmond, but I doubt much whether you would
envy me if you {could} realize what I have suffered
since my departure. I have had a most
terrific spell of asthma. It Kept me in
bed a week in Lynchburg and prostrated
me in that I can even now scarcely [crossout illegible]
walk a hundred yards without being almost
collapsed with fatigue. I have not had
a decent (not to say comfortable) night since
the Commencement of my travels. If I improve
it is so slowly that I am scarcely conscious
of the fact. I can ride on horse back 5
or 6 miles daily without suffering; and I
am lucky enough to know an easy nag at
my command. This is a pretty place.
My quarters are pleasant and my host, Dr [James Lewis]
Woodville, {is} a most Kind and agreeable
person. With rememberance to all inquiring
friends I remain
Yours most truly
A[rthur] E[dward] Peticolas
[To:] Dr L[evin] S. Joynes
